マンデラ氏は晩年、政治家として引退した後もHIV/エイズとの闘いは継続し、治療の普及とHIV/エイズにまつわる差別や偏見の解消を世界に呼びかけていました。その功績を称え、HIV/エイズ分野の国際組織からもマンデラ氏の貢献を称え、逝去を悼む言葉が相次いで発表されています。
